HMAS Sydney was lost at sea off the coast of WA near Geraldton in 1941. She was sunk by the German ship Kormoran. (Later in the trip we came across a lifeboat from the Kormoran). All 645 men on board were lost. The ship disappeared completely and was never found. No sign was ever found of any of the men either. It remained a naval mystery.
This memorial is in Geraldton.
